This is Your Brain
|
The cerebrum is the largest part of the brain and it has two halves. The right hemisphere controls the left side of the body and the Left hemosphere controls the right. In most people, the left hemisphere controls language and logic. The right controls visual-spatial thinking such as recognizing patterns or faces and moving around in the environment. The corpus collosum connects the two hemispheres and allows them to be in direct communication at all times. Isn't it amazing that you can walk and talk at the same time? Even more amazing is the fact that people have experienced brain damage and have been able to teach another part of the brain to do the damaged part's job.

The brain communicates with the body through a system of neurons which carry electrical impulses back and forth between body and brain along the spinal cord. The motor neurons carry messages that cause muscle cells to contract. Sensory neurons collect information from the environment through our sense organs: eyes, ears, nose, tongue, skin, etc. There are about 100 billion nerve cells in the brain alone. The brain also comunicates by sending hormones, or chemical messengers, that affect what the organs do.

The Brain Stem is sometimes called the "reptilian brain" because it is the most primitative, and essential, part of the brain. It controls the body's most basic functions such as heartbeat and breathing. The cerebellum at the back of the brain, controls movement and posture. The midbrain or, the limbic system, is common to all mammals. It controls body temperature, blood pressure, heart rate and blood sugar. It also controls emotions such as love and anger as well as behavior.
